On August 13, 2016, Tonimas celebrated his annual New Yam Festival popularly called ‘Iwa Ji’ among his people at Neni in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State. In his usual way, he appreciated the spirit of industry and empowered lives.

As a way of committing the event to the hands of God, a Holy Mass was celebrated at St. James Catholic church Eziaja Neni,(a Church and rectory single handedly built and donated to Awka Catholic diocese by Tonimas) to kick off the event. He expressed his happiness over the gifts showered upon him and prayed that the Lord blesses Tominas and his households.

On his part, the Chief Celebrant, Onowu Tonimas encouraged Neni community members to work hard. He said that the event was a way of celebrating the gift of God and to drive away hunger from the community. He commended the State government led by Gov. Willie Obiano for his good works especially in the rice plantation at Omor- Adani region. He said that the state government has helped many Anambrarians especially in providing land, fertilizers and aid for planting and harvesting of produce. According to him, the rice produced in Anambra was better than foreign rice.

‘The New Yam festival is our tradition and many communities in Nigeria celebrate new yam festival. The purpose is to thank God for the strength, power, energy, life and privilege to till the ground and make. God instructed Adam in the Bible to till the soil, so we are doing the same. We are not celebrating the yam but we are celebrating God for his grace and love upon our lives. We sow a yam of 200 naira seedling and we sell it for 1500 naira. It shows it is a true gift from God that we need to appreciate. Many people do not have the source of livelihood but they are making it by farming” Tonimas said.
